TSC Addresses 35,000 Teachers Promotion Transparency Process and Concerns

TSC Director of Quality Assurance Dr Reuben Nthamburi, stated that the commission is striving to promote 35,000 teachers who have long been locked in specific job categories while maintaining transparency throughout the process.

He also cited ongoing negotiations with officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) to address any concerns about the promotion process.

Dr. Nthamburi made these views at a consultative conference in Naivasha, which was organised by the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMESTEA) to increase the acceptance of STEM courses in schools.

Collins Oyuu, Secretary General (SG) of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), had questioned the promotion of teachers, asking for more transparency in the process.

Oyuu emphasised that, while teachers interviewed for vacancies posted by their employer, the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), the commission has yet to release the names of successful candidates.

He suggested the publication of the entire names and employment numbers of individuals promoted, as well as their origins, in order to maintain openness. Furthermore, Oyuu emphasised the need to give reasons to unsuccessful candidates.

The suspicions about the promotion process came after the Treasury allocated Sh. 1.1 billion for over 700 advertised posts, with the TSC conducting subsequent interviews. KNUT now questions the exercise’s authenticity.
