Wasio High School Students Storm Govt Offices, Demand Resignation of Principal

On Tuesday, March 19, learning activities at Wasio Secondary School were disrupted when students held demonstrations against the school’s poor-quality meals. The students marched five kilometres to the office of the Sub-County Director of Education to file their grievances.

They accused the school principal of ignoring their requests, particularly the daily provision of kale in lunches. During the rallies, students demanded the immediate resignation of the school principal, citing insensitivity to their concerns.

Suna East Sub-County Education Director Willis Omollo spoke to the press about the situation, promising to launch an investigation and stating that appropriate action would be taken once the claims were verified.

“We gathered their thoughts and addressed their concerns,” he explained. Omollo emphasised the need for continued investigations to produce a full report that can be used to make informed decisions.

The pupils also complained about the school’s insufficient learning circumstances, noting that they were unable to conduct practical sessions, which impacted their academic advancement.

A similar incident occurred on January 10, when students from Oruba Boys High School in Migori protested outside the County Director of Education’s office.

They expressed disappointment with their performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, with 72 out of 75 kids obtaining D grades and only two receiving a C. One student bemoaned, “We had 75 candidates, but the results were surprising.” It’s ironic. “We have never seen anything like this before.”

Despite their efforts to resolve their issues with county education officials, junior staff instructed the students to submit complaints with the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
