TSC To Confirm Over 20,000 Intern Teachers to Bridge 116,000-Teacher Shortage
The government is in talks with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) about employing over 20,000 teachers who have been working as interns to help alleviate the current shortfall.
Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, Director of Quality Assurance at TSC, stated that if finalised, this recruitment, supported by proper government funding, would greatly alleviate the teacher shortage, particularly in the new junior secondary schools.
He praised the government’s dedication to improving education quality, citing the recruitment of 56,000 teachers last year, and said that hiring an additional 20,000 would help bridge the current 116,000-teacher shortage.
In the forthcoming July budget, the government has earmarked Sh 26 billion to absorb teachers into permanent and pensionable terms on the payroll.
The education budget grants the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) the largest portion. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will use part of the allocation of Sh 369.94 billion for teacher remuneration and promotion.
Included in this budget is the confirmation of over 20,000 intern teachers recruited in February 2023, currently in their second internship term ending this year. Those with degrees will be placed in job group C2, while their counterparts with PTE certificates will begin at grade B5.
While 46,000 teachers are serving on internship terms, Teachersupdates.net understands that interns who have completed two years will be confirmed first for permanent terms.
According to the Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Honourable Ndindi Nyoro, speaking in Parliament during the presentation of appropriations for the 2024–2025 government budget, intern graduate teachers with degrees will be placed in job group C2, while their counterparts with PTE certificates will start in grade B5.
Macharia admitted during a media address that most junior secondary schools are facing severe teacher shortages.
