MKU Signs Deal With Namibia University to Enhance Skills Sharing

Mount Kenya University (MKU) and the International University of Management, whose main campus is located in Windhoek, Namibia, have signed an important collaboration agreement.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two educational institutions includes collaboration, the exchange of knowledge, and the adoption of best practices.

Deputy Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, who was present at the event, expressed the desire to educate the youth to become true scientists rather than mere pursuers of academic credentials.

He stated that the more African university students interact while studying prior to entering the workforce or politics, the better it will be for Africa.

He stressed that Africa should prioritize unity and not categorize people based on their regions, emphasizing the notion that they are all one people.

Dr. Nangolo Mbumba reiterated the idea of unity. He notes that there should be no divisions based on Southern, West, or East African regions; they are all one people.

Furthermore, he described the vision of a healthy and food-secured nation where preventable infections and parasitic diseases are effectively managed and the population enjoys a high standard of living, resulting in long life expectancy and sustainable population growth.

Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, vice chancellor of Mount Kenya University, stated that the two countries’ Vision Statements (Kenya Vision 2030 and Namibia Vision 2030) are very similar in that they both seek to establish robust health care systems with the capacity to serve their respective nations in terms of the provision of adequate, affordable, and dependable health care.

The two universities support the vision statements of their respective nations through capacity development.

Prof. Jaganyi emphasized the importance of collaboration between medical schools and governments across borders.

He suggests that such partnerships and benchmarking can play a significant role in reducing healthcare inequalities within the continent.

Subject to the availability of funds and the approval of the vice chancellors of both universities, academic engagements between the MKU College of Health Sciences and the International University of Management’s (IUM) Medical School shall constitute collaboration.

This pertains to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and includes staff and student exchanges and collaborative online teaching and learning.

Additionally, the MOU paves the way for partnerships in;

  • Medical electives
  • Extra-mural rotations,
  • Joint research and publications,
  • Community engagement and primary health care,
  • Telemedicine,
  • Sharing of online resource materials,
  • Joint grant writing,
  • Backlinking of websites, and
  • Any other relevant activities that may be mutually agreed upon in other areas of the two universities.

MKU College of Health Sciences, Dean Dr. Josephat Njuguna, and the dean of the medical school, Dr. Juliet Gathaara, comprise the joint steering committee.

Prof. Peter Nyarango, coordinator of the faculty of medicine, and Wilfred Muller, director of finance, represent IUM.
