MKU Award ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan with an Honorary Degree

Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, is in the country.

Khan arrived in Kenya on August 4 to receive an honorary doctor of law degree at Mount Kenya University‘s commencement ceremony.

When Ruto and Uhuru were brought to The Hague to answer for the 2007/2008 post-election violence, Khan was the principal lawyer.

The university announced the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Karim Khan through a public notice.

The university stated in a statement “This conferment is in recognition of the following:

  • seasoned international criminal law and Human rights lawyer,
  • Community outreach in support of social emancipation through education,
  • service in the fight against terrorism, research and publications,
  • other appointments and awards“.

According to the institution’s website, the ceremony will be officiated over by University Chancellor John Struthers, who will present Diplomas, Certificates, and Degrees.

Moses Wetang’ula, the speaker of the National Assembly, will be the featured visitor at the event.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the rule of law and international justice, the lawyer has been nominated for the degree of Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa).

State House digital strategist Denis Itumbi also announced the news through his social media profiles.

Mount Kenya University will present ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at their 23rd commencement ceremony, according to a post by Itumbi.

Notably, Karim Khan succeeded Fatou Bensouda as prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in June 2021.

When he represented President Ruto in the 2017 post-election violence case at The Hague, his legal expertise was evident.

Karim Khan was also an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, where he held the prestigious positions of first Special Adviser and Chief of the United Nations Investigative Team.
