Gov’t Releases Ksh.30 Billion School Capitation Funds

The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, announced on Wednesday the release of the second batch of Ksh. 30.5 billion for secondary school education capitation, loans, and scholarships for university students. Machogu anticipates that schools will receive the funds before the April holidays next week.

A total of Ksh.7 billion will be allocated to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in public schools, while Ksh.16 billion will be directed to the Free Day Secondary School education programme as grants. Additionally, universities will receive Ksh.6.794 billion for loans and Ksh.3.98 billion for scholarships.

This allocation brings the total amount released by the government for loans and scholarships this financial year to Ksh. 32 billion and Ksh. 12 billion, respectively. In January, Machogu announced the release of Ksh. 14.4 billion to cover scholarships and loans for government-sponsored first-year students in semester two of the 2023–2024 academic year.

The previous year saw the disbursement of Ksh.5.3 billion for student loans, and in September 2023, HELB released an additional Ksh.10.3 billion to support ongoing student loans at universities and TVET colleges.

The recently established Means Testing Instrument (MTI), which assesses each student’s level of financial need, allocates each student’s individual shares.
