TSC Proposes Stricter Professional Development Requirements for Teachers

TSC is set to implement new measures aimed at enhancing the professional development of teachers at both primary and secondary levels. Under the proposed Teachers Service Commission (Amendment) Bill of 2024, teachers registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will be obligated to participate in continuous professional development programs and obtain a practising certificate.

The amendment bill, designed to modify the existing Teachers Service Commission Act of 2012, emphasizes the importance of ensuring compliance with teaching standards among educators.

Failure to engage in prescribed professional development activities or acquire the necessary practising certificate will result in prohibition from teaching, as outlined in the bill.

Responsibility for overseeing the certification process will fall solely on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), which will collaborate with various stakeholders, including academic institutions and government agencies, to provide the required certifications.

TSC may appoint representatives to conduct inquiries at educational institutions regarding compliance with these regulations.

Upon the bill’s enactment, TSC will develop regulations to facilitate the implementation of these additional academic requirements.

To evaluate teachers’ adherence to these standards, an agreed-upon appraisal system will be employed to assess their performance in continuous assessments and certification.

Furthermore, TSC will institute a comprehensive capacity-building program for all registered teachers.

This initiative aims to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to enhance their performance, productivity, and professional development.
