Teachers to Enroll Up To Eight Children in Multi-Billion Medical Scheme
Details of the expanded medical scheme have been unveiled, allowing teachers to enroll up to eight children in the multi-billion program, which has already seen the inclusion of 80,000 children.
Under the enhanced scheme, if a married couple consists of two teachers, each will be treated as a principal member. Consequently, they can independently enroll up to four children, providing a total coverage of eight children per couple.
This adjustment means that even if both spouses are teachers, and they have more than four children, they have the flexibility to decide which children to insure, up to a maximum of eight. Sammy Muthui, the Managing Director of Minet, shared this information.
For teachers married to non-educators, the current allowance remains at a maximum of four children eligible for enrollment in the medical scheme.
It’s important to note that this extended coverage applies to 360,000 teachers, constituting the majority of the 406,000 teachers included in the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) payroll. The scheme continues to play a crucial role in providing health coverage for educators.
In a recent statement, Muthui disclosed that approximately 360,000 teachers, along with 230,000 spouses and 677,000 children, are currently being cared for under the medical scheme, encompassing a total of about 1.3 million lives.

The scheme has introduced enhancements, including a raised maternity cover from Sh100,000 to Sh120,000, reflecting a baby boom among teachers with an average of 175 births daily. Dental and optical covers have also been revised, increasing from Sh35,000 to Sh45,000 and Sh45,000 to Sh60,000, respectively.
In-patient cover now ranges from Sh1 million to Sh3 million, up from the previous range of Sh750,000 to Sh2.5 million. Outpatient coverage for teachers has been expanded from Sh150,000 to Sh450,000, compared to the previous range of Sh100,000 to Sh375,000.
Muthui mentioned that fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), are now covered by the scheme. The cover extends to prosthetics, baby-friendly vaccines, travel vaccines, diagnostic equipment, family planning, and fertility tests.
Plans are underway to separate the life cover, previously under Minet, from the medical cover. The group life cover, currently providing Sh300,000 funeral cover, will become an independent feature.
