Two Kenyan students are scheduled to attend the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin, Ireland in 2023.

Keith Brian, 18, and Maxwell Okoth, 19, both first-year Electrical Engineering students at Strathmore University, will exhibit a smart security system at the international science fair that brings together young scientists.

The innovation is a building surveillance system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect security concerns.

Keith states that burglaries and home invasions occur frequently.  ‘The system will help users to reduce the response time during the attacks, ‘he adds.

The system uses vision learning to analyze human behavior in order to anticipate any irregularities. Upon detection, a redesigned CCTV transmits live footage to an App attached to the CCTV in order to alert a user of a potential threat.

‘We hope that the innovation will be experimented once the project receives proof of concept,’ Maxwell said.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu complimented the students for adopting technology as a means of addressing societal concerns as they paid him a courtesy call at the ministry’s offices.

The CS stated that innovations enrich the society in which we live, enhance the quality of life, and inspire people to explore alternative solutions to human concerns.

The CS remarked that the innovation presented a challenge to young people of many ages and disciplines to utilize their unique skills.

‘One does not have to attain the highest level of education to innovate anything,’ Machogu said.

The students were led by the principal of Kanga High School, Mr. Kodiango Rueben, the chairperson of the Parents Association, Dr. Ondoro Boniface, and their teacher mentor, Mr. Marshall Onyango.

In 2020, Keith and Maxwell were two of three Kanga High School students to win the coveted Young Scientist Kenya prize for the same concept.

Marshall Onyango stated that the students’ accomplishment is a tremendous source of motivation for children who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses.
