Ruto Direct TSC, Unions to Fast-Track Teachers’ Pay Rise talks

President William Ruto has urged expedited negotiations on teacher salary increases.

Yesterday, Ruto implored the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and union representatives to reach a swift agreement.

The teachers’ unions rejected the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) pay increase proposal.

Ruto acknowledged ongoing discussions between TSC and teacher representatives and urged an acceleration in the negotiations.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to allocate resources for improving teachers’ compensation packages.

Ruto made these remarks at the Kenya Music Festival Winners’ Concert held at State House, Nakuru.

He was speaking a day after teacher unions rejected the 2.4% proposal for higher job groups and the 9.5% proposal for lower job groups, stating that it did not even match the President’s and the Salaries Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) recommendations.

The TSC and teachers’ unions were unable to reach an agreement on compensation increases after the unions rejected the employer’s offer of between 2.4% and 9.5%.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) have given the TSC until Monday to present an improved proposal.

The Kuppet general secretary called the employer’s action “deceitful” after requesting a 30 to 70 percent pay increase, stating that the TSC’s proposal was less than the presidential announcement and the SRC’s recommendation of 7 to 10 percent.

In the meantime, Knut general secretary Collins Oyuu, who had demanded a 60% increase across all grades, appeared content with the proposed 2.4% to 9.5% increase due to its distribution.

“2.5–9.5% is acceptable to KNUT. 2.4% is allocated to the highest earners, while 9.5% is allocated to the lowest. Nothing has been reduced; it would not be accurate to state that TSC has taken a lesser sum of money.
