The Gremon Education Center in Mombasa County has been closed down by the Ministry of Education after a student was injured while being punished for allegedly eating too many chapatis.
Adan Hussein, Coast Regional Education Director, stated to the media on Tuesday, February 1, that the decision was made after they discovered that the institution was not properly registered.
He went on to say that the school would remain closed until the administration met the ministry’s requirements.
‘The conclusion of the report is that the primary wing is closed as it is not registered. The secondary wing should also be closed because they do not meet the safety and hygiene standards of the ministry. The school will be closed until they fulfil our requirements,” he revealed.
The decision was made amid reports that the Class 7 student had kidney damage as a result of the punishment.
According to the student’s mother, Agnes Mwangi, the school allegedly attempted to conceal the incident.

When she went to the principal she was told that the case was a non-issue
“I almost concurred. But I was overwhelmed by the fact that my son cannot even stand unless he is assisted. Is this an incident that can be referred to as a non-issue?”
She claimed that the principal ordered the students to beat up her son after they discovered he had chosen five chapatis rather than one during dinner. Agnes went on to say that her son’s injuries were life-changing and that she didn’t know if he would recover.
Dr. Nabil Varwani stated that the student required extensive medical attention because his wounds were infected. The victim also had injuries to his genitalia and kidney, according to the doctor.

Nancy Gachewa, the school’s director, stated that the investigation would reveal what exactly happened and that the wounds were not inflicted by the teachers.
“There is no teacher who beat up the student. It was the student who turned against him. Since the matter is under investigation, let us wait for the investigations to be completed,” the principal insisted.
