50% of KCSE candidates in Naivasha Prison Serving life Sentence

Seven of the 15 Naivasha Prison inmates taking the KCSE exam are serving life sentences.

However, after being transferred to another detention facility, one of the inmates missed the national exams. The candidates have expressed optimism that they will receive excellent grades despite the difficulties that come with being incarcerated.

Dominic Onyango, 50, is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, while Gilbert Chirchir, 25, is the youngest convict.

Despite the difficulties in prison, Onyango stated that he is eager for a second chance after failing his exams before being imprisoned.

He urged the government to provide more assistance to the education sector, which has shown to be the primary source of rehabilitation.

Onyango reported that the most significant challenge they have encountered relates to practical exams, primarily due to the lack of a laboratory facility on-site.

Hassan Tari, the prison’s officer in charge, expressed confidence that the detainees will perform well in the exam.

The examination materials arrived at the prison as scheduled, and all the inmates attended, except for those who had been transferred or released.

He stated that the jail service had provided all necessary support to the inmates because education had proven to be a tool for rehabilitation.

He reported that the exams commenced as scheduled, and the incarcerated individuals displayed confidence in their ability to perform well, despite a few emerging challenges.

Despite heavy rains affecting parts of the constituency, Nancy Mutai, an education official from Naivasha subcounty, has reported that no issues have been recorded.

She mentioned that all the schools received the exam materials on schedule, and there were no reported issues on the first day.
