2023 KCPE Results: Students With 99 Marks and Below Triples

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu expressed concerns about the significant increase in the number of candidates scoring below 99 marks in the 2023 KCPE compared to the 2022 exams.

In his speech at Mtihani House on Thursday, the CS highlighted that 2,060 candidates scored below 99 marks, a notable rise from the 724 students with similar performances in the 2022 KCPE exams.

Machogu also mentioned a slight drop in candidates scoring above 400 marks, decreasing from 9,443 in the previous year to 8,523. The overall number of candidates scoring between 100 and 199 points increased from 296,336 to 383,025. The majority of candidates fell within the 200–299 category, rising from 619,583 to 658,278 candidates.

Candidates scoring between 300 – 399 marks also saw an increase from 307,756 to 352,782 students. English, English composition, and Kenyan Sign Language showed significant improvement compared to KCPE 2022, with female candidates outperforming their male counterparts. However, subjects like Mathematics, Sciences, and Kiswahili recorded a slight decline in performance.

Machogu emphasized his mission to celebrate the transition from a system that served well in the past four decades to one that will serve better. The CS released the 2023 KCPE results, marking the conclusion of the final KCPE examination under the 8-4-4 system. Out of the 1,406,557 candidates, 721,544 were male, 685,017 were female, and 205 unregistered candidates were allowed to sit the exams in line with the 100 percent transition policy.
