Kenyan Universities Lead East Africa in 2024 Edurank Top 100 Academic Institutions Ranking

Kenyan universities ranked first among East Africa Community (EAC) institutions on Edurank’s 2024 Top 100 Best Academic Institutions ranking.

According to Edurank, an independent metric-based ranking of 14,131 universities from 183 countries worldwide, Kenya ranked seventh in the Top 100 African universities.

Tanzania, on the other hand, secured three slots on the list, while Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) tied at two. Notably, no other EAC member state had any of its academic institutions listed among the top 100 African universities.

Kenya’s top 100 institutions include the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Strathmore University, Moi University, Mount Kenya University, and Egerton University.

Reports place the University of Nairobi as the only Kenyan university among the top 2,000 universities in the world, ranking 8th in Africa and 824th globally.

JKUAT ranked 53rd continentally and 2,702 globally, while Kenyatta University ranked 38th in Africa and 2,232nd overall.

Other Kenyan universities on the top 100 list included Strathmore University (68), Moi University (73), Mount Kenya University (81), and Egerton University (83).

Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam ranked 25th, followed by Sokoine University of Agriculture (49th) and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (94th).

Despite Uganda having only two institutions in the top 100, Makerere University emerged as the top university in the EAC, ranking 7th continentally and 819th internationally with a 50% acceptance rate.

Uganda’s Mbarara University of Science and Technology ranked 95th in Africa and 3,363rd overall.

Despite decades of civil warfare, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has two top-100 institutions: the University of Kinshasa (54) and the University of Lubumbashi (89).

Edurank emphasised that the rating was based on research outputs, non-academic importance, and alumni impact.
