This year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination yielded a top scorer who achieved 428 out of 500 marks. On Thursday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu unveiled the results for the 1,406,557 candidates who took the KCPE exams.

Addressing the audience at the new Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) headquarters in South B, Nairobi, CS Machogu highlighted that 8,525 candidates attained scores exceeding 400 marks, constituting 0.60 percent of this year’s class.

Meanwhile, 352,782 candidates secured marks between 300 and 399, representing 24.92 percent of the cohort. The bracket of 200–299 marks had the highest number of candidates, totaling 658,278, making up 48.49 percent.

Additionally, 38,3025 candidates scored between 100 and 199 marks, accounting for 27.05 percent of the total candidates. Those with less than 99 marks numbered 2,060, constituting 0.15 percent of the cohort.

In terms of gender distribution, 51.3 percent of this year’s class comprised male candidates, while females made up 48.7 percent. CS Machogu observed that female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili, and Kenyan Sign Language, whereas male candidates excelled slightly more in math and science.

The education minister commended the high levels of integrity in this year’s examination, reporting that only two candidates were involved in cases of exam malpractice. Notably, 9,354 candidates did not participate in the examination, and they have been given the opportunity to sit for the exam in January.

The KCPE examination, conducted between October 30 and November 1, marked the conclusion of the 8-4-4 education system in primary schools.

The 2-6-3-3-3 competency-based curriculum (CBC), introduced in 2017, has replaced the 8-4-4 system after 39 years since its introduction in 1985.

CS Machogu reassured the nation that all curriculum materials are in place to support learners, reflecting positive indicators of quality learning and teaching within the cohort.
