Parents Defy TSC and Machogu’s Orders, Raid School Principal’s House, Throw Out Belongings Over Poor Results

Defying directives from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Wednesday, parents of 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates at Narok-based Oloisonkoyo Primary School took matters into their own hands.

Disregarding warnings not to confront school heads over poor exam results, the parents staged a protest at the principal’s residence, demanding his resignation.

Caught off-guard, the school principal faced the ire of the demonstrating parents, who forcefully expelled him from the government-assigned residence. Belongings were thrown out, and the parents accused the principal of being solely responsible for the dismal performance in the 2023 KCPE exams.

Addressing the press, the parents asserted that the principal’s focus on farming, rather than improving academic performance, was to blame for the disappointing results. One parent expressed their dissatisfaction, stating, “Instead of being on a break or learning, our students are weeding or digging in his farm. We want him to go.”

The November 2023 exam results revealed that almost all students scored only 100 marks out of a possible 500, hindering their chances of securing spots in their preferred high schools. The parents also raised concerns about the school’s inadequate teaching staff, with only six teachers struggling to cope with the number of students.

Pleading with the Ministry of Education, the parents called for an increase in the number of teachers or the closure of the school, allowing them to use the land for farming.

In response to such incidents, CS Machogu had previously cautioned that law enforcement would intervene if parents resorted to physical confrontations with school heads over poor results.

He directed parents to channel their grievances to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) for resolution. Additionally, Machogu asserted that learners also bore responsibility for the subpar results and disclosed ongoing efforts within the Ministry to reassess certain teachers to ensure effective teaching.
