Teacher’s Suicide Sparks Violence in Nyamira as Mob Torch 4 Houses in Revenge Attack
In Nyantutu and Mosocho villages of Manga, Kitutu Masaba, Nyamira County, four houses have been set ablaze by an irate mob following the death of a teacher, Joseck Ondara.
It is believed that Ondara committed suicide by jumping into a well at Tinga market, after he was conned by his neighbour, Erick Omwenga, who had promised to sell him a piece of land. Omwenga is the owner of the four homes that were attacked.
According to Thomas Obwoge, a neighbour, the mob broke down doors and windows before pouring petrol on the furniture, the bed and then setting them alight.
Although the police managed to disperse the mob, there are concerns that there could be more unrest if the authorities do not take action against Omwenga.
It is alleged that Ondara had lost a significant amount of money that he had paid to Omwenga to purchase land.
His death appears to have been the final straw for the community, who have been affected by the ongoing economic hardship and increasing corruption.
According to Chief Abel Oroti, they have launched a probe on the allegations and warned residents against taking actions into their own hands.
The police officers from Manga Police Station have launched investigations into the incident and are expected to record statements from those who were at the scene. Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Omwenga remain unknown.
The situation is particularly troubling as Kenya is already grappling with an increase in conflict, which has caused a great deal of human suffering and economic damage.
The root cause of these conflicts is often land-related issues, which have become more acute as a result of population growth, urbanization, and the commercialization of agriculture.
The situation is further compounded by the failure of the state to adequately protect the rights of vulnerable communities, leading to a sense of injustice and marginalization.
In conclusion, the incident in Manga is a wake-up call for the government to take action to address the root causes of conflict, including land reform, and the protection of the rights of marginalized communities.
The government must act decisively to prevent such incidents from happening in the future, and ensure that justice is done for those affected by the conflict.
