Govt Advises Parents to Opt for Day Secondary Schools Amidst Fee Concerns
The Government has recommended that parents facing financial constraints in sending their children to preferred schools due to high fees should consider enrolling them in Day Secondary Schools.
Jane Njogu, the Director of Education in Nyeri County, emphasized the importance of seeking affordable alternatives for well-performing students rather than keeping them at home.
Njogu expressed concern over the negative impact of this trend on the education of such children, emphasizing the need for parents to take advantage of Day Secondary Schools.

Contrary to perception, she highlighted that many of these schools have achieved impressive results in national exams, urging parents not to underestimate their value.
Addressing the issue of financial challenges hindering students’ education, Njogu acknowledged the support provided by elected leaders and individuals, particularly in areas such as Tetu, Nyeri Town, Mathira East, and Mathira West. Lawmakers have stepped in to assist students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing education in Day Secondary Schools.
The Director commended the efforts of Kagumo High School alumni, who are offering scholarships to bright students unable to enroll due to financial constraints.
While recognizing the government’s limitations in providing bursaries to every needy student, Njogu praised Members of Parliament and individuals for their financial assistance initiatives in various constituencies.
Updating on the transition from class eight to Form One, Njogu revealed that the county has achieved a 97 percent transition rate. Plans for a comprehensive mop-up exercise in all sub-counties, particularly focusing on informal areas, aim to ensure that no child eligible for Form One is left behind.

The government’s nationwide mop-up exercise, launched on Monday, seeks to guarantee the smooth transition of all class eight candidates from last year to secondary school.
Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, emphasized the collaboration with the Ministry of Interior to achieve a 100 percent transition rate.
He warned parents that failing to enroll their children in school could lead to prosecution, emphasizing the availability of free and fully funded education in government-supported day schools.
To attain a 100 percent transition rate, the government faces the challenge of accommodating all 1.4 million class eight students who constituted the last cohort of the defunct 8-4-4 system into secondary schools.
