Local leaders in Baringo County have underscored the importance of supporting teacher training colleges, recognizing them as vital institutions for producing well-trained educators.

Joshua Kandie, the Member of Parliament for Baringo Central, called for collaboration between different levels of government to improve the infrastructure of local educational institutions, including teacher training colleges.

Kandie noted that some of these institutions are in deplorable conditions, adversely affecting the learning environment for students. To address this issue, he proposed providing capitation funds to teacher training colleges.

This financial support would enable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access quality education without the burden of high fees.

Dr. Silas Chepkwony, the senior principal of Moi Teachers Training College, made a statement. He mentioned that the college currently has 714 students.

This number decreased because of higher entry requirements three years ago. The college needs a new female hostel and renovations for existing buildings.

These buildings haven’t seen any upgrades since the institution’s founding in 1991.

He expressed optimism that the college will soon receive the necessary support from all stakeholders so that it can continue to produce reliable professionals not only within the country but also internationally.

During the ceremony, 305 teachers received enhanced diplomas.

These diplomas were in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), Primary Teacher Education, and Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).

The leaders spoke during the 28th graduation ceremony at Moi Teachers Training College in Baringo, where Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu presided.
