Female Teacher Who Went Missing In December Discovered Dead
A female teacher who went missing in December was discovered dead.
After her remains were discovered yesterday, a family’s hopes of reuniting with their daughter who went missing in Nyahururu nearly two months ago dashed.
This is after detectives discovered her decomposing body in an abandoned well in Igwamiti, Nyahururu Laikipia County’s Igwamiti location.
Miriam Wanjiru, a teacher at the same town’s St Louis Secondary School, went missing on December 19, 2021, leaving her one-year-old infant in the care of her housekeeper.
After three days of nursing and soothing the restless baby, the worried nanny walked to Losogwa police station and filed a missing person’s report.
With each passing minute of her mother’s absence, the baby had changed from the little calm angel that the nanny knew. Detectives based at Nyahururu swung into action and began investigations into the teacher’s disappearance.
During their investigation, they discovered that Wanjiru had divorced her husband, Peter Kanyi, due to irreconcilable differences. Wanjiru’s estranged husband had called her on the day of her disappearance, sounding sickly and frail, and asked her to go save him from death after ingesting poison.
The deceased, who had no idea she was being led to a death trap, rushed to save her little angel’s father, never to be seen again.
Detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) joined the investigations two days ago in an effort to expedite the investigations and bring the suspect to justice.
The main suspect in the murder, Anthony Mutahi, 29, was arrested yesterday using cyber forensic analysis of digital data processed at the DCI National Forensic laboratory.
After a lengthy interrogation, the suspect led the investigators to 90-metre-deep water well, where he had disposed of the deceased’s body. The detectives recovered the body, which was missing its head.
Upon further examination of the well, a second badly decomposed body of an unidentified teenage girl was discovered. Since then, Scenes of Crime experts have taken samples from the body for DNA profiling.
The investigators also discovered that following the couple’s divorce, the deceased sold a matatu that belonged to her and that her estranged husband used to operate, leaving him jobless.

Further investigation revealed that the main suspect had used her ATM card to withdraw Sh120,000 from the deceased’s Equity bank account in Nyahururu town.
The deceased’s estranged husband, Peter Kanyi, has also been arrested and will face murder charges along with his accomplice, in violation of Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s little angel is being cared for and protected by the local Children’s Officer, who is collaborating with DCI’s Anti Human Trafficking and Child Protection detectives to ensure the infant’s well-being.
