KNUT Threatens To Boycott Exam Invigilation Over Teachers’ Pay

Due to pay delays, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is threatening that teachers may not oversee the 2023 national exams.

According to KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu, it took an entire year for teachers to receive payment for supervising last year’s KCPE, KCSE, and KPSEA exams. On Saturday in Eldama Ravine, Oyuu stated that the payments were delayed despite their multiple letters to KNEC.

The chairman of the KNUT added that teachers will not serve as invigilators for the upcoming national examinations unless they receive clear instructions regarding payment.

The Ministry of Education cited budgetary constraints for the delayed pay to examiners and invigilators contracted to oversee national examinations administered by KNEC.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njeng’ere told MPs, “We administer exams, then pay in advance, and the balance is paid later. We do not enjoy owing teachers, we have already given them what we were given by the exchequer.”

KNEC teachers who supervised, administered, and graded the 2022 national examinations received their payment this month.

The majority of teachers who participated in the exam marking exercise have expressed on social media that they may not be available for future marking exercises if the Ministry of Education does not take immediate action to resolve the dispute over payment.
