Upgraded Teacher Salary Scale in Kenya As Pay Hikes Take Effect
After the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) made the first payment following the agreement’s ratification on Monday, the agreement’s finer points emerged.
The TSC’s chief executive officer, Nancy Macharia, has announced that teachers will receive a pay raise ranging from Sh139 to Sh5,141.
Under the new structures, primary school teachers will earn between Ksh. 22,793 and Ksh. 28,491.
Those in job grade C1, including those working in primary, secondary, and lecturing, will receive a salary between Ksh. 28,491 and Ksh. 35,614. The teachers who fall under C1 and are classified as Primary Teacher I, Lecturer III, and Secondary Teacher III follow them.
Group C2 teachers classified as Senior Teacher II, Lecturer II, Special Needs Education Teacher II, and Secondary Teacher II will receive a pay raise ranging from Sh1,666 to Sh3,677.
Grade C2 teachers, lecturers, and special needs teachers will therefore receive a salary between Ksh. 36,621 and Ksh. 45,776.
Senior Teacher I, Special Needs Education Teacher II (secondary), Special Needs Education Teacher I (primary), Lecturer I, and Secondary Teacher I will receive a raise between Sh1,258 and Sh2,571.
Teachers and lecturers with grade C3 will earn between Ksh. 44,412 and Ksh. 56,514.
Teachers in job group C4, which includes Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, Special Needs Education Senior Teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools, and Deputy Head Teacher II, will receive a Sh2276 and Sh1,835 pay raise, respectively.
And for C5, which comprises Senior Master III, Senior Lecturer III, Head Teacher, Assistant Head Teacher I, and Curriculum Support Officer II, there will be a Sh139 and Sh2,498 pay raise.
Due to the consolidation of two levels within the same employment group, some teachers in this category will receive a modest raise.
Teachers in grade C5 will earn between Ksh. 62,272 and Ksh. 78,667.
Group D1
Group D1, which includes Senior Master II, Deputy Principal III, Senior Headteacher, Senior Lecturer II, and Curriculum Support Officer I, will receive a raise ranging from Sh785 to Sh1,693.
Deputy Principal II, Senior Master I, and Senior Lecturer I will receive Sh1,078 and Sh1,308.
Senior masters, headteachers, deputy principals, and senior lecturers in job grade D1 earn between Ksh. 77,840 and Ksh. 95,101. Those in job grade D2, deputy principals 2, and senior master 1 teachers earn between Ksh. 91,000 and Ksh. 110,000.
Principals and Deputy Principals 1 are classified in Grade D3 and will receive a raise of between 538 and 1,496 shillings, while Senior Principals in Job Group D4 will receive an increase of between 282 and 1,690 shillings.
Basic salaries for Senior Principals, who fall under job grade D4, range between Ksh. 118,000 and Ksh. 143,000, while those for Chief Principals, who reside atop the pay scale at grade D5, range between Ksh. 131,000 and Ksh. 159,000.
Chief Principals in job group D5 receive Sh4,367 and Sh1,878, respectively.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet) signed the agreement.

Additionally, teachers will benefit from a reevaluation of their allowances in addition to their new base salaries. This comprehensive salary restructuring aims to improve the financial well-being of educators across various job grades.
House Allowance:
The instructors will also receive the commission’s customary annual raise, which is intended to offset the rising cost of living.
However, this is not all. In addition, teachers in rural areas will receive a higher dwelling allowance. They will now receive a housing allowance ranging from Sh3,850 to Sh25,000. Prior to this, they received between Sh3,850 and Sh21,508.
However, instructors in Nairobi will receive between Sh6,750 and Sh50,000 in housing allowances.
