Two Out of 1.4 Million Candidates Caught Cheating in KCPE 2023
A mere two out of the 1.4 million candidates who attempted the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2023 were caught for academic dishonesty.
Contrary to examination regulations, one of the candidates was discovered in the examination room with unauthorized notes, while the other was in possession of a mobile phone.
Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education, described it as a significant improvement over the KCPE examinations of the previous year.

Examination malpractices the previous year involved a total of 252 students. These incidents were attributed to candidates having prior knowledge of the examinations and collusion between invigilators and the students.
Yesterday, while unveiling the 2023 KCPE results at Mtihani House in Nairobi, Machogu commended the officials and candidates who worked together to ensure the examination’s integrity.
After the implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) system, this marks the final KCPE under the 8-4-4 system.
Machogu expressed his appreciation to the candidates and all officials for their efforts in safeguarding the integrity and credibility of the 2023 KCPE examination.

According to the CS, the Ministry’s nationwide expansion of distribution centers reduced the incidence of fraudulent activities.
Additionally, he attributed the examination’s integrity to the double collection, which demanded that center managers gather the second session paper in the afternoon.
Machogu implemented the measures to prevent instances of premature exposure, citing previous years when second documents were reportedly tampered with.
