Slight Shift in Gender Parity as Male Students Dominate 2023 KCPE Results
Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education, remarked, however, that gender parity has been attained for the past nine years.
Machogu highlighted that the country achieved gender parity for male and female candidates between 2013 and 2022, realizing the benefits.
In 2023, Machogu reported a slight shift in gender parity, with male candidates constituting 51.30 percent and female candidates at 48.70 percent.
When the country initially administered the KCPE examinations 39 years ago, the CS observed a glaring gender gap in educational access.

Machogu highlighted an improvement in achieving gender parity during the 8-4-4 period, contrasting it with 1985, when the country had a lower gender parity, favoring male candidates at 59.2 percent and female candidates at 40.8 percent.
Significant endeavors and initiatives to ensure gender-neutral access to education have culminated in this accomplishment, according to him.
Machogu elucidated that attainment serves as an indicator of favorable developments in terms of female enrollment, retention, and access to education, thereby narrowing the previously existing gender divide.
Among the 1,406,557 candidates who participated in the KCPE examination in 2023, 685,017 were female, or 48.70 percent of the total.
The remaining 721,544 were male, or 51.30% of the total.
