KUPPET Calls for JSS Placement in Secondary Schools

Concerns continue to persist one year following the implementation of junior secondary learning.

Junior secondary schools should be reclassified from primary to secondary schools, according to the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet). The Kenyan government still has time to reconsider the decision.

The JSS, according to Kuppet chairman Omboko Milemba, requires additional funding in order to operate.

Kuppet chairperson Omboko Milemba has expressed concerns about the potential strain on teachers with the introduction of the second JSS Grade 8 in 2024. He emphasized that unless the government recruits a total of 85,000 teachers by January, the existing staffing in JSS will be insufficient to deliver meaningful education in the institutions.

Additional stakeholders in the education sector concurred with these views.

Kenya Secondary School’s Heads Association (Kessha) chairman Kahi Indimuli stated earlier this week at a function in Matungulu that the move would negatively affect education if the government did not reverse its course of action.

“I am not afraid to say that children in junior secondary schools today are getting a raw deal and this needs to be reversed,” he said.

Even instructors have expressed that junior secondary education is difficult for them.

Before two classes transition to junior high school in January, stakeholders demand a meeting with the Ministry of Education to deliberate on how to address the crisis.
