TSC-Hired JSS Teachers Warn of Strike, Demand Confirmation of Permanent, Pensionable Status

If TSC does not provide better terms, JSS teachers may put down their tools.
Teachers Service Commission (TSC)-hired Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have threatened to stop working in January 2024.

On Wednesday, teachers from Homa Bay County staged a demonstration in which they threatened to stop working if the government failed to confirm their permanent, pensionable employment.

The government, through TSC, recruited the teachers on a contract basis last year. TSC has employed them as teachers in JSS institutions currently located in primary schools nationwide. The commission had assured them of a transition to a permanent and pensionable basis.

According to them, they have labored for a year at JSS without adequate employment conditions, notwithstanding the enormous burden that is typical at such establishments.

Teachers affiliated with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) had previously expressed concerns regarding their excessive workload and assigned responsibilities at their respective primary institutions.

“In some schools, the JSS teachers are compelled to teach primary school classes and subjects that they have not been trained to teach,” Siaya County Executive Secretary Sam Opondo said.
