KUPPET Wants Govt to Incorporate JSS in Secondary Schools and Absorb Teachers on Internships
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has urged the government to incorporate Junior Secondary institutions’ (JSS) interests more effectively into secondary schools as they currently stand.
Sammy Chelang’a, national tertiary secretary of KUPPET, stated at an Annual General Meeting for teachers from Elgeyo Marakwet at Sambirir Secondary School that it is the responsibility of secondary school teachers to manage the topics and subjects covered in JSS.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the majority of facilities required for instructing JSS students, such as laboratories, swimming pools, and technological tools, are not accessible, especially in public primary schools.
This situation puts students at a disadvantage. As a result, university-educated teachers assigned to JSS find themselves incapable of managing the workload due to inadequate preparation.

Presently, a teacher with a bachelor’s degree has the authorization to teach in a maximum of two subjects. However, upon assignment to JSS, that individual takes on responsibility for fourteen untrained subjects across the sciences and humanities.
For instance, he lamented, “We have teachers who are trained in Geography/Kiswahili but are required to teach fourteen subjects, including sciences, in which they have no training.”
Major stakeholders and education experts, according to Chelang’a, were dissatisfied with the JSS curriculum’s implementation and claimed that children were receiving an unfair deal.
Furthermore, he urged the government to absorb instructors on internships, arguing that it was inequitable to employ them for a single year with the stipulation that they would not be subject to rehiring.
