Akello Misori, Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, has reiterated the union’s position that teachers will not report to work in unsafe areas.
Misori had threatened to strike if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) did not meet their demands on Wednesday.
Misori urged the government to work around the clock to solve the insecurity problem, particularly in the North Rift, where schoolchildren have been caught in the crossfire, in a speech delivered in Kisumu on Sunday.
“The threat we issued in relation to the exams is due to the fact that quite a number of regions especially the Northern frontier and some parts of the Rift Valley are violent prone,” he posed.
He added: “…And in this case, we feared that we cannot expose our teachers over this period that if there’s no security then they must not take exams

The KUPPET Secretary-General went on to say that while they are not opposed to the government or its procedures for administering national exams, no teacher should volunteer in war-torn areas.
He noted that the union is not opposed to the government’s administration of national exams because those who will supervise exams are teachers.

"The threat that we posed was basically not a threat but a question that in the absence of security in these areas that I have mentioned the teachers should keep off because the security is wanting,” he added.
Prof. George Magoha, the Education Cabinet Secretary, had urged the union to call off the planned strike, urging teachers to reconsider their decision in order to protect students taking upcoming exams.
