In an effort to ensure that students under the age of 18 do not lose out on college funding, the government has waived the requirement for national identification cards.

On Tuesday, during a cabinet meeting convened by President William Ruto at Kakamega State Lodge, the decision was ratified. The move is also a relief for the more than 2,000 students under the age of 18 who are scheduled to enroll in public universities next month.

Concerns were raised about their plight after they were locked out of the university fund portal for lack of identification documents, while others had invalidated their recently acquired National Identification Cards.

The Cabinet provided additional information regarding the 2023–24 placement cycle for university and higher education learning students and the implementation of the new funding model.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education has been directed to expedite access to scholarships for all eligible students in collaboration with all relevant parties.

Cabinet considered and approved the promotion of 13 Technical and Vocational Colleges to National Polytechnic status in order to increase access to higher education through a balanced institutional framework.

KUCCPS Opens Applications for the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

Elswhere, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is now accepting admissions applications for the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

Agnes Mercy Wahome, chief executive officer of the KUCCPS, stated that applications will be free and without a deadline.

Students will be able to study at their own pace and convenience due to the Open University’s innovative learning model and modular program structure, according to Wahome.

According to the university’s published admissions requirements, work experience, brief courses, and prior learning recognition will be considered when admitting students to degree programs.

The university seeks to break down traditional barriers and provide more Kenyans with flexible and convenient access to university education.

President William Ruto formally chartered the OUK on August 3, 2023.

It is expected to benefit Kenyans who missed early opportunities or encountered barriers such as formal grades, age, ability to pay, gender, or geographic location in their pursuit of a university education.

Professor Elijah Omwenga, Vice-Chancellor of the university, has requested that five degree programs and two postgraduate diploma courses be listed on the student placement application portal.

The minimum admission requirements for undergraduate courses are a KCSE or equivalent certificate and a portfolio demonstrating prior learning.

Bachelor of Data Science, Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor of Technology Education, Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Bachelor of Economics and Statistics will be offered as undergraduate programs.

Included in the postgraduate programs will be the Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability and the Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Design and Technology.
