Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei is advocating for a centralized disbursement of bursaries to improve equity and transparency.

During a consultative meeting at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, regarding the status of devolution in Nandi County, Cherargei expressed his intention to introduce a bill aimed at streamlining bursary allocation to ensure fairness in distribution.

He emphasized the urgency of reforming the bursary distribution process to achieve a full transition of students into schools, citing instances where children from financially vulnerable backgrounds struggle to attend school due to insufficient funds.

Cherargei stressed the need for a consolidated approach to bursary allocation, combining county bursaries, National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), and Ministry of Education bursaries to better assist deserving students.

Cherargei highlighted the challenges faced by parents in accessing bursaries, often having to navigate various offices without success.

He supported the Ministry of Education’s initiative to facilitate fee payments for students in national schools through the e-Citizen platform, arguing that this streamlined process would curb corruption and promote transparency.

The senator endorsed the government’s efforts to enhance accountability through the e-Citizen portal, emphasizing the importance of all government payments being made through this platform to track revenue effectively.

According to government sources, the Directorate of e-Citizen has established a transparent payment collection system to ensure timely and complete disbursement of funds to schools.

To facilitate the smooth implementation of the new payment system, a phased approach will be adopted, starting with National schools before extending to Extra County and County schools.

Cherargei’s proposals aim to address systemic challenges in bursary allocation and financial transactions within the education sector, ultimately improving access to education for vulnerable students.
