Moi University Stringent Dress Code Bans 14 Outfits
In accordance with the institution’s Code of Conduct, Moi University is introducing new and stringent dress code regulations for its students.
Dr. Alice Mutai, the Dean of Students, issued an internal memo on Tuesday, February 6, informing students about the enforcement of the dress code.

The university will now strictly prohibit attire such as mini skirts, skin-tight trousers, ragged or ripped jeans, tumbo-cut blouses or t-shirts, and low-cut blouses or dresses.
Additionally, students are banned from wearing micro shorts, transparent dresses, sleeveless t-shirts, or any attire displaying obscene writing.
The list of prohibited clothing also includes sagging trousers, attire revealing the chest, as well as slippers, crocs, and unofficial plastic shoes.
Dr. Mutai emphasized that this directive stemmed from concerns raised regarding students’ indecent dressing habits.
She referred to Article 3.1.1 a, c, d, and e of the Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct & Discipline of Students, stating that students are expected to dress modestly and appropriately.

Furthermore, Dr. Mutai warned that strict disciplinary measures would be taken against students found violating the dress code. University staff were instructed not to serve students who fail to comply with the prescribed guidelines.
This move aligns Moi University with other institutions like the University of Eldoret (UoE) and Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), which have also implemented strict dress code policies.
Previously, UoE prohibited cross-dressing in January 2023, following the passing of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba. Similarly, KeMU enforced regulations banning dreadlocks, plaited hair, earrings, and attire exposing one’s navel or skirts above the knee. Students returning after holidays were required to adhere to these rules.
