Ruto Sets Aside Ksh19.7 Billion for Teachers Recruitment

President William Ruto has announced the allocation of Sh19.7 billion to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for the purpose of teacher recruitment.

Ruto disclosed yesterday in Mombasa, during the Taxpayers Day festivities, that the funds will be allocated from the supplementary budget that is presently pending National Assembly approval.

The education sector will receive Sh62 billion as part of the supplementary budget.

Ruto stated that the budget allocated to TSC has experienced a Sh20 billion increase due to the recruitment of additional teachers. He further noted that a total of 56,000 new teachers have been included in the payroll for the current year.

The Kenya Kwanza administration has made commendable progress in addressing the teacher shortage over the past year with the employment of 35,790 additional teachers.

It is worth mentioning that primary schools gained the services of 3,986 teachers, of whom 1,000 were hired on permanent and pensionable contracts.

Furthermore, junior secondary schools welcomed the employment of a noteworthy 9,000 permanent and pensionable teachers, in addition to the 21,365 intern teachers that were similarly recruited. In contrast to the previous administration’s strategy of hiring around 5,000 teachers per year, the current administration intends to conduct a recruitment campaign.

In comparison with the previous year, President Ruto stated in July that the government had employed 35,000 teachers, marking an unprecedented number in recent history. He also mentioned the aim of recruiting an additional 25,000 teachers by August, with the goal of providing every child in Kenya with access to quality education.

Following the supplementary budget, an additional Sh62 billion will be allocated to the education sector for the current fiscal year, in addition to the Sh628.6 billion it received.

The Head of State noted that the budget for education had increased substantially, from Sh545 billion to Sh690 billion compared to the previous year. With the inclusion of the current supplementary budget, there is an additional Sh145 billion allocated to education. He emphasized that this increase is intentional and aimed at ensuring that every child in Kenya has access to education and the opportunity for a better life.

A further Sh29.3 billion, for a grand total of Sh157.9 billion, is allocated to the State Department for Higher Education and Research in the supplementary budget. Under the new financing model, this funding will be utilized to support scholarships.

Human capital development, according to Ruto, is reliant on investment. A substantial increase of Sh48 billion is being allocated to our universities. Therefore, enhanced human capital is what he perceives as approaching.
