10,000 Primary School Heads Convene to Drive Education Reform Away from 8-4-4 System

Over 10,000 primary school head teachers have gathered in Mombasa for their yearly conference.

In an effort to initiate constructive transformations in the education sector, teachers are convening to redefine the 8-4-4 system.

The Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (Kepsha) chairman, Johnson Nzioka, conveyed the teachers’ satisfaction regarding the existing educational structure of the nation.

Following the completion of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination by the final class last week and the subsequent phase-out of the 8-4-4 system in their educational institutions, attention has shifted to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Nzioka made this statement during a press conference held at the Sheikh Zayed Children’s Welfare Hall in Mombasa County. The event served as a platform for school heads to come together for a week of discussions. He expressed his satisfaction with the discontinuation of the 8-4-4 system and the full integration of the CBC system into Kenyan schools.

He further stated that the difficulty associated with overseeing two educational systems has been resolved.

President William Ruto was commended by Nzioka for addressing the issue of teacher shortages in public institutions. Additionally, he urged the government to address the infrastructure issues that are prevalent in junior secondary schools, including the absence of laboratory activities in some institutions.

Nzioka, speaking on behalf of Kepsha members, expressed their appreciation to President Ruto for the increased teacher recruitment during his time in office. They expressed hope that he would also address additional challenges that educators encounter within the education sector.

Several Kepsha officials accompanied Nzioka when he stated that CBC has made significant strides forward, with teachers enthusiastically preparing for the eighth grade’s introduction in junior secondary schools the following year.

The Kepsha chairman asserted their full readiness for Grade 8 in the coming year, as it will take over from Standard 8, which recently concluded their KCPE examination, clearing the path for the full implementation of CBC.

Head teachers, according to Nzioka, would deliberate on a variety of subjects in an effort to find ways to reshape education.
