Private Schools Asked To Meet Minimum Approval Standard For Junior Secondary

The Ministry of Education has stated that in order to be approved for junior secondary school, private schools must have adequate learning and teaching facilities.

Addressing the media after assessing the readiness of private schools in Kirinyaga’s Kerugoya Municipality, State Department for Implementation of Curriculum Reforms Principal Secretary Fatuma Chege stated that the government, through the Ministry, will collaborate with private schools to ensure the curriculum’s success.

“We are here to check how the private schools are preparing to host junior secondary schools. They are our partners and we want the curriculum to run smoothly both in public and private schools,” Prof Chege said.

The PS clarified that private schools will be permitted to host the junior secondary school if they have fully equipped science laboratories.

“As we transition to junior secondary, science subjects will be integrated and the laboratories are key facilities that must be there,” she added.

Prof Chege stated that she has visited various private schools and that because each has its own operating style, the majority are at various and advanced stages of meeting the minimum requirements.

She added that, in addition to classrooms and laboratories, the Teachers Service Commission is training enough teachers to ensure that everything is in order by 2023.

“I have been in various schools in the country and they are in different stages in terms of facilities.“

Private schools are not dealing with private children; they are dealing with Kenyan children, so we must collaborate for the sake of our children,” PS stated.

The PS also stated that when the student chooses schools to attend, all private schools that have met the requirements will be included in the selection list.

Kenya National Private Schools Vice Chairperson Solomon Munene expressed gratitude for the government’s support and urged private schools to work hard to meet all Ministry requirements.

“We appreciate government support in the implementation of the new curriculum.
