University of Nairobi Implements eCitizen Platform for Meal Payments

University of Nairobi (UON) has issued a directive requiring students to process their meal payments through the government’s eCitizen platform.

This directive affects 12 kitchens within the institution and aligns with the Government’s guidelines on service payments.

In compliance with the government directive, the university has established systems to facilitate payments, as explained in an official notice.

Governor Faculty of Health Sciences Ramesh Saxena, clarified that the service is free, dismissing claims of a Ksh50 service fee circulating online.

Saxena emphasized, “There are no additional charges. On the first day of implementation, I did not incur any extra costs.”

He further explained that the payment method utilizes the government’s pay bill system, albeit with a government pay bill number, streamlining payment processes.

Under the new system, students are required to utilize the government’s pay bill number instead of the previous ones.

Instructions provided entail accessing M-Pesa, selecting the Lipa na M-Pesa’s Pay Bill option, inputting the Pay Bill number 222222, and entering the account number corresponding to the specific kitchen outlet.

Upon specifying the payable amount for the meal and entering their PIN, the money is deposited into a centralized pay bill.

Notably, this system affects various kitchens across different campuses of the university, including Upper Kabete, Kikuyu, Kenya Science, Kenyatta Medical School, Comcare Cafe, and Central Catering Unit, among others.

The centralization of payments through the pay bill number 222222 was initiated by the government in 2022, aimed at providing a unified platform for service payments across public institutions.
