Multimedia University Students Protest Hyena Attacks, Disrupt Traffic on Magadi Road

Operations along the Magadi road, which connects Ongata Rongai to Nairobi, were disrupted by Multimedia University students on Tuesday, February 6. This action followed a severe attack on a student by a hyena, leaving him critically injured.

Protesting students, in significant numbers, obstructed the busy highway and ignited bonfires, effectively halting traffic flow.

Expressing their discontent, the students accused the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) of negligence in addressing the hyena threat, insisting they would persist until a resolution was reached.

The incident occurred on Monday, February 5, when two individuals, including a 21-year-old Multimedia University student, fell victim to stray hyena attacks around 8 pm. The injured student was swiftly taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Venting their anger, the students emphasized that such attacks were not isolated incidents, demanding immediate containment of the wild animals.

A similar outcry emerged in December of the previous year when residents of Nyacaba village in Juja Sub-County protested on Thika Road. This protest followed the tragic death of a middle-aged woman mauled by hyenas.

Police faced difficulty retrieving the woman’s body as residents demanded the apprehension of the hyenas before any other action was taken.

Residents recounted that the woman, on her way to work around 5 am in Witeithie, was attacked, illustrating the urgency of addressing the hyena menace.

In January of the current year, KWS officers issued safety guidelines for encounters with hyenas, stressing the importance of remaining calm and facing the animal until it retreats. They advised making loud noises and appearing aggressive to deter the hyenas.
