Former Jaramogi Oginga VC Professor Stephen Agong’ appointed MKU Council chair

Professor Stephen Agong’, former vice chancellor of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, has been appointed Mount Kenya University’s Council chair.

Prof. Agong’s reputation as an educator spans more than three decades.

He was the First Vice Chancellor of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) and a professor of horticulture.

Prof. Agong, a seasoned scholar, will now supervise the administration of the university.

He succeeds Dr. David Serem, who served for three years beginning in 2020.

Prof. Agong was the Principal of Bondo University, College, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Planning, Research, and Extension Services at Maseno University, and a Professor of Horticulture there.

Additionally, he served as the JKUAT’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Planning, and Development and Associate Professor of Horticulture.

Prof. Agong was also the Secretary General of the Plant Breeders Association of Kenya, the Director of the Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology at JKUAT, and the founding chairman of the Horticultural Association of Kenya.

In addition to horticulture, blue economy, food and nutrition security, and climate change, his research interests include sustainable horticulture.

Other disciplines at the university include training, science, technology, policies, management, and leadership.

Prof. Agong was previously a member of the Governing Council and Executive Director of the African Academy of Science (AAS). He was elected Treasurer of the AAS this year.

He has postdoctoral experience from Hannover University (Germany) and Okayama in Agricultural Science (Dr Agriculture), University of Giessen, Germany, in addition to a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi.

Prof Agong was awarded the Matsumae International Fellowship for Peace Award; he is a member of the International Society of Horticultural Science and a Fellow of the AAS; he has extensive experience in national, regional, and international research, mentoring, and academic leadership; and he has played a significant role in the publication of peer-reviewed articles in international journals.
