UON Announces Delay of Salary Payment of Lectures & Staff
The University of Nairobi has announced an unanticipated “delay” in the payment of July salaries to its employees.
There are 2,220 academic staff with PhDs, 450 professors, and 5,525 administrative and technical personnel at the University of Nairobi.
In a notice dated 3 August, the University urged its employees to exercise patience while the matter is resolved.
The letter signed by the acting vice-chancellor Julius Ogeng’o states, “We are writing this letter to extend our sincerest apologies to our esteemed staff for the delay in payment of July salaries.”
Ogeng’o has not stated the reason for the postponement, stating only that “it was due to unforeseen circumstances.”
According to him, efforts are presently being made to expeditiously release the salaries.
Ogeng’o’s resignation comes just one day after he replaced Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama, who is on a six-month leave of absence.
The communication follows a similar decision to tens of thousands of civil servants across all ministries, attributed to a technical glitch.
The processing of state payrolls has been hindered by technical issues, according to internal memoranda issued by various departments.
The Ministry of Public Service reported that ongoing enhancements to the new payment system for government salaries experienced technical difficulties.
“Please be advised that due to the migration of the old manual Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database (IPPD) system to the new online unified human resource (UHR) system, the officers’ salaries for the month of July 2023 will be delayed,” A memo dated 25 July was issued by the State Department of Correctional Service.
The same was stated in a second memo from the department of gender.
In March, the University Academic Staff Union expressed concern regarding salary delays at all public universities.
Constance Wasonga, secretary general of the Union, stated that the majority of universities have not yet paid February salaries to their academic staff; he warned that the university staff would strike if the delay persisted.
