List of Top Best Universities in Kenya 2024: UniRanks Latest Ranking

Nine local universities have secured positions within the top 100 higher learning institutions in the region, as reported by uniRanks, the global university ranking body.

The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology have emerged as the leading institutions in Kenya.

Following closely are Mount Kenya University, United States International University Africa, Egerton University, Moi University, and Kenya Methodist University, maintaining a notable standing among the top Kenyan universities.

These institutions underwent a comprehensive evaluation based on key indicators measuring their performances across four crucial areas: teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The assessment criteria also encompassed factors such as institutional charters, licenses, or accreditation by relevant higher education-related organizations in their respective countries.

Furthermore, the universities met the criteria of offering at least a three-year bachelor’s degree or postgraduate master’s or doctoral degree, or delivering courses primarily in a traditional non-distance education format.

In the regional context, the University of Nairobi secured the sixth position in Africa, trailing behind South Africa’s University of Cape Town. The top positions in Africa were clinched by the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Stellenbosch, and Egypt’s The American University of Cairo.

The global rankings place the University of Nairobi at position 924, with South Africa’s University of Cape Town leading at position 236 for six consecutive years, with Harvard University maintaining its overall top position.

Among the other local universities in the African rankings, Kenyatta University secured the 28th position, while Strathmore University claimed the 42nd spot.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, Mount Kenya University, and United States International University Africa held positions 49, 51, and 65, respectively. Egerton University and Moi University secured spots 81 and 82, with Kenya Methodist University closing the list at position 97.

In the broader African landscape, South African universities dominated the top ten, with seven institutions, while Egypt featured three institutions in the top 10 category. Notably, the University of Nairobi stood out as the sole Kenyan representative among the best institutions of higher learning.

Other prominent African academic institutions within the top 100 include the University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Johannesburg, Alexandria University, University of Western Cape, Mansoura University, University of Ghana, Rhodes University, Makerere University, Addis Ababa University, Ain Shams University, University of Ibadan, and University of the Free State Cadi Ayyad University.

The overall distribution of top-ranking institutions across the continent reveals that South Africa boasts 19 universities within the top 100, followed by Egypt with 15, and Ghana with four. Algeria and Morocco each contribute 10, while Mozambique has two universities ranked.

Uganda and Ethiopia each have one, and Nigeria is represented by 11 universities. Libya, Senegal, Botswana, Mauritius, Rwanda, Zambia, Sudan, Eswatini, Malawi each contribute one university to the rankings.
