CBC Subjects Reduced as ‘Secondary’ Title is Scrapped from Junior & Senior Schools
As a result of the recommendations of the Presidential Working Group on Education Reforms, pupils and students in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) education chain will now have less schoolwork.
The number of subjects taught in Junior Schools has been reduced from 14 to nine. The term ‘secondary’ has been removed from the junior and senior levels of basic education.
The implementation of the CBC system of education in the country, and particularly the first transition into Junior Secondary, has been fraught with a myriad of obstacles; from insufficiently trained teachers to a lack of learning materials and infrastructure.
Schools have struggled to implement this level of education.
Lower primary students will have seven subjects, down from the current nine; upper primary students will have eight subjects, down from twelve; and junior school students will now study nine subjects, down from the current 14.
Senior school students will be tested on a total of seven subjects, with Mathematics and either Kiswahili or English being required.
The term ‘secondary’ has been eliminated from junior and senior schools, and students transferring from junior to senior schools will no longer be considered present.
