Zetech University Wins Africa Innovation Prize
Zetech University’s Izethub, its innovation hub, secured a substantial boost of Sh1.53 million as it clinched the first runner-up spot in the Africa Telecommunications Union (ATU) Africa Innovation Challenge, affirming its dedication to enhancing digital skills among the youth.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Njenga Munene, highlighted that this achievement underscores their commitment to technological advancement and the development of globally resonant digital solutions. Zetech’s success in the competition, which drew participation from 26 higher education institutions across Africa, reflects a significant milestone in the pursuit of innovation.

During the challenge, Zetech showcased several innovative solutions, including Paul Waweru’s Ecomobilus and electric bike innovations, Samuel Oduor’s Real Oil project, and a smart farm project by a group of three students.
Prof Munene emphasized that Zetech’s collaboration with industry leaders such as Huawei, Oracle, Cisco, and Microsoft played a pivotal role, providing expertise and resources that facilitated knowledge sharing and access to industry trends. The ATU judging panel commended Zetech University for its strong partnerships and lauded Huawei’s contribution of training equipment to bolster skills development.
Veritas University of Abuja secured the top position, with BlueCrest College Sierra Leone taking third place. The Africa Telecommunications Union (ATU) Africa Innovation Challenge aims to bolster groundbreaking innovation across the continent.

Meanwhile, in a separate event, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo welcomed a delegation from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), led by Dr Cosmas Zavazava, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau, International. The ITU team’s visit to Nairobi coincided with their participation in the 2nd African Preparatory Meeting for WTDC-25, organized by the African Telecommunications Union (ATU).
During discussions, Mr Owalo and Dr Zavazava explored initiatives within the ITU’s Bureau of Telecommunication Development (BDT) that align seamlessly with Kenya’s National Digital Master Plan 2022-2032 and the Kenya Digital Economy Blueprint, aiming to achieve universal connectivity and foster meaningful digital transformation in Kenya.
Mr Owalo highlighted Kenya’s hosting of several international conferences, including the Connected Africa Summit in May, as pivotal events that will elevate Nairobi’s status as the ICT hub of Africa. He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to enhancing digital skills for youth and promoting e-commerce through initiatives like the National Addressing System, expressing unwavering support for the ITU in fulfilling its mandate.
