Professor Ogeng’o Appointed UON Acting VC
The Council has granted Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama of the University of Nairobi a six-month leave of absence.
Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi noted in an internal memo that Kiama requested a sabbatical leave until the end of January 2024.
The memo states, “This is to inform you that the Council of the University of Nairobi, at its special meeting on July 31, 2023, approved the Vice Chancellor’s request dated July 28, 2023 to proceed on a six-month leave beginning August 1, 2023.”
However, Orindi did not explain why Kiama requested the extended period away from his work station.
In his absence, the Council appointed Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, effective August 1, 2023, to perform the duties of Vice Chancellor in an acting capacity.
Ogeng’o is a Human Anatomy professor and the current Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
He is also the Director of the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Self-Sponsored Programmes.
He is an experienced lecturer and medical specialist with degrees from the University of Nairobi in BSc, MBChB, PhD, MD, and DSc.
Kiama assumed the role of UON Vice Chancellor on January 5, 2020 for a five-year term that will conclude in 2025.
Previously, he served as the Vice-President of Human Resources and Administration.
