TSC Faces Probe Over Teachers’ Funeral Benefits Removal, AON Minet Role Questioned
MPs have begun investigating claims that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) no longer reimburses teachers or their dependents for funeral expenses in the event of death.
Omboko Milemba, a member of parliament for Emuhaya, asserted that under the new AON Minet medical plan, funeral costs are no longer covered for deceased teachers or their dependents.
AON Minet, an insurance provider, was re-awarded a contract to provide medical insurance coverage to over 318,000 teachers and their dependents under the Teacher Service Contract (TSC).
Omboko, who requested a statement from the commission, wants TSC to elaborate on the scope of the Group Life and Last Expense medical coverages provided to instructors under AON Minet.
“List the steps taken to expedite the implementation of the AON Minet medical scheme for teachers,” he requested.
Since the Standing Orders prohibit Chief Executive Officers from answering questions on the House floor, Tiaty representative Kassait Kamket wondered how TSC would respond to the queries.
Temporary Speaker Martha Wangari stated that she would assist Omboko by referencing a supplement to the Standing Orders that enables questions to the independent commissions to receive responses within the committees.
Teachers actively employed by the Recruitment, Training, and Support Center (RTSC) are eligible for coverage as Principal Members under the Minet Teachers’ Medical Scheme. As a result, all instructors receive medical coverage.
