Students Reject Teaching Courses in TTCs Despite Scholarships
Governor Mr. Nathif Jama has expressed regret that locals in the region have refused to enroll in Teacher Training courses. This is despite his administration’s promise to provide scholarships to students pursuing the courses.
He pointed out that continually attributing the reluctance of teachers from other regions to teach in places like Hulugho or other remote areas within the county was not a fair approach.
According to him, the issue stemmed from the fact that local youth were not showing interest in enrolling in teaching courses.
He pointed out that the local community’s young individuals have shown a lack of interest in enrolling in teaching courses.
The Governor raised the question of how many local students were currently enrolled in teacher training colleges.
He highlighted the efforts they had made to communicate with these students and even implemented measures like affirmative action and sponsorships for teacher training programs within the region.
However, he expressed frustration that, despite these initiatives, there were no takers for the opportunities presented.
“We have Garissa Teachers’ Training College here, we cannot keep blaming teachers from other regions for refusing to go to schools in places like Hulugho or other interior areas in the county because our young people have refused to enroll for teaching courses,” Jama said.
He questioned the logic of criticizing external teachers for declining positions when the local community’s own members were not stepping forward to educate their children.
“How many local students are enrolled in teacher training colleges now? We have tried to speak to them and even introduced affirmative action and sponsorships for teacher training courses here but no one takes up the offer. If our own do not want to teach our children, why are we blaming others for refusing to teach here?” the Governor posed.
