20 University Courses Rejected By KCSE Candidates Since 2019

In Kenya, not all university courses enjoy equal popularity among KCSE candidates. Every year, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) releases data showing that certain programs receive low application numbers or are entirely avoided.

Despite being available at reputable institutions, these courses often face rejection due to factors like limited career opportunities, perceived difficulty, low salaries, or lack of awareness.

As students increasingly prioritize employability and career growth, many tend to favor programs in fields such as medicine, engineering, business, and information technology, while sidelining others they view as less promising. This trend has prompted education stakeholders to reconsider how these less popular courses are marketed and aligned with the job market.

In the past few years, the Ministry of Education has grappled with a significant challenge in placing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates into universities and higher education institutions.

Since 2019, KCSE candidates have been turning away from several university courses, citing reasons ranging from poor teacher guidance to issues with the selection process.

To address these challenges, teachers in charge of career departments are advised to actively assist students in choosing suitable degrees, diplomas, certificates, and artisan programs.
