Abdi Ali, member of parliament for Ijara, has stated that he will provide complete scholarships to any students in his constituency who enroll in teaching programs.
Yesterday, at the Jamhuri day celebrations in Masalani town, the member of parliament urged the local youth to take advantage of the available scholarships in order to assist alleviate the county’s teacher shortage.
“I have seen the way our students are performing because of lack of teachers. As your leader, I have a responsibility to bring solutions to our problems and so I am announcing full scholarship for every form four leaver who will enroll in a teaching course,” Ali said.
Boaz Cherutich, a county commissioner in the region, urged local government leaders to make concentrated efforts so that young people can enroll in technical colleges and obtain the essential skills for boosting the economy.
In Ijara, there is a technical college that has been well-equipped by the government.
“We are asking all our leaders here to help us mobilize and have students enroll in the college and expand their knowledge,” Cherutich said.
“Just the other day we were looking to employ technical people in phase two of the LAPSSET project, we did not get the electricians, masons, and drivers locally because we have not given our young people an opportunity to study these courses,” he added.
In January of next year, the Teachers service commission has announced the hiring of 35,550 teachers.
9.000 Permanent and pensionable teachers will be assigned to secondary and primary schools, while 21,550 intern teachers will be sent to junior high schools and 4,000 to basic schools.
According to the Teachers Service Commission, Garissa County has a teacher shortfall of 913 in primary schools and 656 in secondary schools. The county will receive 56 permanent and pensionable positions and an additional 134 internship positions.
