SEKU: Varsity Without Chancellor, VC And Council Chair

After two weeks of student unrest at the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) in Kitui, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has given the Education Ministry one month to resolve the leadership issue that, according to them, is impeding the institution’s academic progress.

On Saturday, while speaking to the media, the secretary of the UASU Kitui chapter, Mboya Kivai, blamed the Education Ministry for the ongoing pandemonium.

Students have protested twice in the past two weeks due to the university’s lack of critical leadership.

Without a chancellor, vice-chancellor, or council chair, SEKU has been operating.

According to Kivai, the absence of the institution’s three main leaders is causing numerous operational difficulties.

While it is necessary for the college’s chancellor to confer degrees and diplomas on graduating students, nobody in Kwa Vonza has the authorization to do so.

Mr. Kivai expressed that there is a serious problem of leadership in SEKU due to the absence of these officers, causing suffering among the staff.

“We want to tell the country that there is a serious problem of leadership in SEKU. Because of the absence of all these officers, staff are suffering,” said Mr Kivai.

In October, the campus will host a graduation ceremony.

In addition, university employees have not received their annual pay raise for the past four years.

As a result, UASU has urged Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to address the situation expeditiously so that normalcy can resume at the institution.
