Secondary School Teachers Shortage Hits 58,581: Top Understaffed Counties
While the majority of school-aged children attend primary schools, secondary schools have the greatest teacher shortage.
In addition, there are 9,246 secondary schools with a total of 123,985 teachers, but they require 182,566. This means that the institutions are 58,581 short.
Details indicate that, after Kakamega County, Bungoma County has the second-highest teacher shortage in secondary schools.
Bungoma, which has 370 secondary schools, is 3,529 teachers short.
The county of Nakuru, which has 373 secondary schools, is 2,875 teachers short.
Following it is Homa Bay County, which has 333 secondary schools and a 2,570 teacher shortage.
Bomet County closes the top five secondary schools that are understaffed.
With 280 secondary schools, the county requires 2,368 teachers.
All 9,246 secondary schools in Kenya require 58,581 teachers to be assigned to high schools.
According to the interim report of the task force, the teacher shortage has been caused by an increase in the number of students enrolled in basic education, 100% transition, and free secondary education.
They argue that the Competency-Based Curriculum has exacerbated the problem by introducing new learning areas.
TSC is currently hiring 20,000 instructors to alleviate a teacher shortage in schools.
TSC reported that 18,000 intern teachers will be hired and assigned to junior secondary schools (JSS).
