President Ruto Reveals Plan to Hire 20,000 Teachers This Year

President William Ruto has announced plans to present a proposal to Members of Parliament, seeking the hiring of 20,000 teachers in the current year. Emphasizing education as an equalizer, he asserted the necessity for every child in the country to receive an education.

During a church service in Teso South, Busia county, on Sunday, Ruto expressed his commitment to ensuring that no class remains without a teacher. He urged MPs to engage in discussions on the proposal for the employment of additional teachers.

“This year I will take a proposal to Parliament. I want the MPs to hold discussions so we can employ 20,000 more teachers to educate our children,” he said.  

Furthermore, the Head of State disclosed the government’s intention to employ an additional 2,000 teachers for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. Ruto highlighted the prior hiring of 56,000 teachers to educate children and the forthcoming recruitment for TVET institutions across the country.

“We will hire more teachers to educate our children so that no class will lack a teacher. That is the commitment we are making to our people,” declared President Ruto.

Addressing the significance of education, Ruto pledged to address any issues in the education sector and stressed that no class should be without a teacher.

In 2023, 56,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers were hired, with only 10,000 receiving permanent and pensionable terms, while the remaining were engaged on contractual terms as interns.

Additionally, Ruto issued a directive to school heads, urging them to permit pupils and students to continue their studies, regardless of whether they have paid tuition fees. He criticized school heads for pressuring parents and students over unpaid fees, noting that the government had already disbursed Sh62 billion in January for learner education.

Furthermore, Ruto directed school administrators to permit pupils and students to engage in studies regardless of whether tuition fees had been paid. He condemned the harassment of parents and students over nonpayment, stating that the government had already disbursed Sh62 billion in January for education.

Ruto criticized school heads for misleading parents about unpaid school fees, asserting, “Managers of institutions should stop taking advantage of the vulnerability of our people to force parents to pay school fees under the pretext that the government has not released money.”
