Parents in Vihiga Seek Answers for Bounced Bursary Checks
Some parents from Vihiga’s Emabungo ward want the county government to explain why their purported bursary checks bounced.
The parents claimed at Kima that some secondary schools fined them after learning that they had submitted fake checks as part of the county government’s school fee assistance program.
“I was shocked when the school informed me that the check had bounced and that I was required to pay an additional fine of Ksh. 1,000,” Judith Olenja said.
Melisa Ndale, another parent, claimed her child was on the list of beneficiaries, but she never received the check because there was no checkbook.
“Our governor should investigate this matter, and if any misconduct is discovered, the perpetrators should be dealt with firmly,” another parent said, complaining that some students boast about receiving bursary checks worth Ksh. 20,000 while others receive Ksh. 3,000.
“Why do some of us receive blank checks while others miss out on bursary aid, while others brag about receiving Ksh 20,000?” This bias should be controlled,” the parent added.
The parents have accused their County Assembly representative, Michael Okoba, of ignoring their concerns and have threatened to protest to demand justice.
The Emabungo ward MCA, however, verified that he had received complaints from approximately seventeen parents regarding allegedly bounced checks.
“The county’s education department has begun investigating the circumstances under which some pupils received blank checks while others were overlooked despite being on the list of beneficiaries. I promise that this issue will never occur again,” said Okoba, who is also the chair of the Education Committee of the Vihiga County Assembly.
